Dr. Luke Cheung has once been a high-school teacher. In response to God’s call, he went for full time gospel ministry and completed his Master of Divinity at China Graduate School of Theology in 1983. After pastoring in the Cumberland Presbyterian Church for about three years, he furthered his study in Moore Theological College, Australia, focusing on New Testament studies. He was back to Hong Kong in 1989 and joined the faculty of China Graduate School of Theology. In 1995 to 1999, under CGST’s scheme of Faculty development, he again furthered his study overseas in University of St. Andrews, Scotland, under Prof. Richard Bauckham. He earned his PhD in 1999 and re-joined the CGST’s faculty. Cheung’s areas of research interest include Second Temple Judaism, Christian origin, Catholic Epistles, and social-scientific and canonical approach to New Testament Studies. He has served in two administrative posts in CGST: Academic Dean (2008-2013), and Vice-president (2013-2019).

Cheung sees theological training involves not only in passing on information in biblical and theological knowledge and pastoral skills, but also life transformation. That is a great challenge to him as a teacher, because it would mean that he also has to grow maturely as a person. Theological education serves the church in training ministers for the Kingdom. He himself has also been deeply involved with pastoring in the local church, making sure that theological training fits in well with the needs of the church. He was ordained in Cumberland Presbyterian Church in 1991. At different periods of time, he has been minister-in-charge in three different congregations within the denomination since 1992. He officially retired from the Presbytery in 2020.
