1965-66
God gave a vision to four seminarians, at the time studying at Westminster, Philadelphia, to establish an indigenous, inter-denominational, evangelical and graduate level theological institution for the purpose of training university graduates to serve the churches in China and to evangelize around the world.
1969
After two years of negotiation, the Preparation Committee of the Seminary Project, formed by the four seminarians, merged with the US Board of the North China Theological Seminary and took the new identity of the US board of China Graduate School of Theology.
1972
In 1975, the CGST US board decided to establish a school in Hong Kong and CGST was incorporated. A new board was later formed.
1975
God prepared the Devon’s Campus and on September 28, we celebrated the grand opening. The ten-year vision became a reality and for the Chinese theology education, we turned a new page.
1975-85
CGST offered Master of Divinity, Master of Christian Studies and Diploma in Christian Studies. These programs were accredited by the Asia Theological Association in 1979. 1981-82, during program expansion, CGST cooperated with several Christian organizations: joint ventured with Breakthrough in developing the Counseling Program, partnered with the School of World Mission of Fuller Theological Seminary in offering a Chinese Mission Program, and worked with the Korea Asia Seminary in developing the Master of Theology Program.
1985-95
In 1986, the CGST Journal came off the press. In the same year, Master of Theology Program was started. In 1989, we worked with the Ontario Theology Seminary (later known as Tyndale Seminary) in establishing a Chinese Ministry Program. In the 90’s, CGST started to work with other theological seminaries in China. At the same time, CGST offered Master in Christian Counseling and worked with the Graduate Christian Fellowship in offering a part-time evening Diploma program.
The Millennium
As we celebrated our 25th anniversary, the redevelopment of the Devon Road Campus was completed. The PhD program was launched in 2002. CGST became a member of the Association for Theological Education in East Asia (ATESEA) and our degree and diploma programs were accredited. During our celebration of the 30th anniversary, CGST purchased the lot adjacent to the Dorset Campus, with the plan to redevelop the campus. It is planned to increase faculty members and continue to prepare servants for the Kingdom of God.
